Maker Spotlight: Cheekbone Beauty - Indigenous-Owned, Clean Cosmetics

Cheekbone Beauty started with a dream. In January 2015, founder Jenn Harper, an Ojibwe woman from St. Catharines, Ontario, had a vivid dream of little Indigenous girls, laughing and covered in colorful lip gloss. That image stayed with her, and it became the seed for one of the first Indigenous-owned and founded cosmetics companies in Canada.

Jenn built the company from her basement, eventually pitching it on Dragons' Den in 2019. Today, Cheekbone Beauty is a certified B-Corp, carried by major retailers like Sephora and JCPenney, and known for clean, vegan, cruelty-free formulas with refillable, low-waste packaging.

The mission has never been just about makeup. Cheekbone has donated more than $250,000 to Indigenous causes, including the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society and the Navajo Water Project, and runs a scholarship fund supporting Indigenous students. As Jenn puts it: "Representation saves lives."
